Apparently I first met Anneliese when I was about two years old. I can't say I remember that first meeting but ever since she left an indelible impression on me. There were many things that linked us, and having her in my life, knowing how sincerely felt her empathy and understanding were as I struggled with my own ME provided real reassurance and hope. I will always marvel at her ability to be a one woman network creator. I sat at the dinner table with Anneliese and Mike and a myriad of guests on so many lovely occasions. Sometimes with students, sometimes academics, sometimes friends. She would do everything she could to create connections between people and build community wherever she saw the opportunity. It was a gift and a calling. Everyone needs a cheerleader like Anneliese in their life. She was a gem of a human being. I will miss her presence, her warmth, her wit, her humour and her ability to ask incredible questions both of the serious and silly variety. Most of all though, I will just miss her. For me, Anneliese will always be synonymous with York, and as I continue to visit I'm sure it will always feel an emptier place in her absence.
